"What is a Search Engine"
The good news is, on the Internet, your Search Engine requires no gasoline, oil, or maintenance! So, what exactly is a Search Engine?
On the Internet, a Search Engine has three parts:
One part
that actually reads each page of every Web site that declares itself to be searchable, specifically searching for links.
A second part
that is a program that takes each "discovered" link and then catalogs them into a huge index.
A third part
that is a program that receives your search request, compares it to the entries in the index, and returns results to you.
Structured directories of topics are an alternative to using a Search Engine. Yahoo, which also supports a Search Engine, is the most widely-used directory on the Web. A variety of Web portal sites include both Search Engine and Directory approaches to gathering information.
Major search engines include:
AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com)
Excite (http://www.excite.com)
Google (http://www.google.com)
Hotbot (http://www.hotbot.com)
Infoseek (http://www.infoseek.com)
Lycos (http://www.lycos.com)
WebCrawler (http://www.webcrawler.com)
Voila! Instant information!
